MPP Overview

MPP (Machine Payments Protocol) is an open, extensible protocol designed specifically for programmatic payments between machines. It standardizes how clients (autonomous agents, applications, or humans) discover, pay for, and consume paid services—like LLM inference, image generation, or web search—all within a single HTTP request-response cycle. This eliminates the friction of traditional checkout flows and manual API key management for programmatic access.

How to use MPP

Using MPP involves integrating either a client or server SDK. As a service operator, you integrate an MPP server to accept payments without requiring user signups or billing accounts. As a developer, you integrate an MPP client into your agent or app. When your agent requests a paid resource, the server responds with a payment challenge (402 status). Your client then fulfills this challenge (e.g., via a crypto transaction or card payment) and retries the request with proof of payment to receive the resource and a payment receipt.

Core Features of MPP

  • Open Standard: Built on an open specification proposed to the IETF, ensuring transparency and interoperability over proprietary APIs.
  • Payment-Agnostic Design: Supports stablecoins (like USDC), cards, bank transfers, and other assets (USD, EUR, BTC) through a single protocol.
  • Idempotency & Security First: Idempotency, security, and receipts are first-class primitives within the protocol design.
  • Composable Control Flow: A flexible core allows for advanced extensions such as dispute resolution or identity primitives.
  • Official SDKs: Provides high-quality, official SDKs for TypeScript (mppx), Python (pympp), and Rust (mpp-rs).

Use Cases for MPP

MPP is ideal for enabling autonomous agents to consume paid services seamlessly. Primary use cases include: paying per token for LLM usage through providers like Tempo; paying per request for image generation from services like fal.ai; accessing real-time web search via Parallel; and accepting payments for your own API from any client type (agents, apps, humans) without onboarding friction.

Advantages of MPP

MPP offers significant advantages by addressing the interface-level problem of programmatic payments. It drastically reduces latency and increases reliability by bypassing browser-based checkout flows, visual CAPTCHAs, and ever-changing payment forms. It provides a neutral, unified layer for all payment methods, simplifies integration for both service providers and consumers, and empowers truly autonomous agent economies.
